The number printed on the brochure is the fresh water capacity, and it is almost never the number that ends your trip.
Manufacturers advertise fresh capacity because it sounds like range. A 60-gallon fresh tank reads like a week of independence. What actually happens is that on the morning of day six you find the grey tank full, the shower drain backing up, and twelve gallons of unused fresh water sloshing behind a panel you cannot get to. You break camp not because you ran out of water, but because you ran out of somewhere to put it.
This is the single most useful thing to understand about tank sizing: the binding constraint is almost always grey. Size around that, and everything else follows.
What people actually use
Every published figure for daily water use is either a residential number that has no business in this conversation, or a hero number from someone selling a conservation gadget. The honest range is wide because behaviour dominates hardware.

Most people who describe themselves as careful land at 4 to 5 gallons per person per day the first time they measure it honestly. Plan at that. If you turn out to be stricter, you gain days, which is a pleasant direction to be wrong in.
The one variable that swamps everything else is the shower. A standard RV showerhead moves around 2.5 gallons per minute; a low-flow head around 1.5 to 1.8. A five-minute shower at stock flow is twelve gallons — more than a strict user’s entire allocation for four days. Fitting a shut-off valve at the head and a 0.5 GPM aerator on the galley tap costs about twenty dollars and does more for your range than any tank you could bolt on.
The arithmetic that actually matters
Water leaves your fresh tank and goes to one of four places: down your throat, into the air, into the grey tank, or into the black tank. Drinking and cooking losses are small — call it half a gallon per person per day. Toilet flushes go to black. Everything else — 75 to 85% of what you draw — lands in grey.
Work a real example. A mid-size travel trailer with 60 gallons fresh, 39 grey and 39 black. Two people, conservative tier, 4 gallons each per day, so 8 gallons a day total.
- Fresh: 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 days
- Grey: inflow is roughly 80% of draw, so 6.4 gallons a day. 39 ÷ 6.4 = 6.1 days
- Black: five flushes each at roughly 0.35 gallons is 3.5 gallons a day. 39 ÷ 3.5 = 11.1 days
Grey ends the trip at day six, and you leave with twelve gallons of fresh water you paid to carry. The black tank — the one everybody frets about — had another five days in it.
That pattern holds across the great majority of production rigs, because manufacturers size grey at 50–70% of fresh and split it across two undersized tanks so the spec sheet reads well. Once you know to look for it, you can spot it on any floor plan in about ten seconds.
The exceptions are worth naming. Grey stops being the constraint if you have a composting toilet and no black tank at all, in which case grey inherits the toilet’s former job of being the thing you think about; if your bathroom sink is plumbed to black, which some manufacturers do to balance the tanks and which quietly shortens your black runtime; or if you shower outside and let it go on the ground, which is legal in fewer places than people assume.
Two grey tanks are not one grey tank
A number of larger trailers and fifth wheels advertise a headline grey figure that is actually two separate tanks — typically a galley tank and a bathroom tank, with no crossover between them. A spec sheet reading “76 gal grey” may mean 30 gallons serving the kitchen and 46 serving the shower.
That distinction is invisible on the brochure and decisive in practice, because the two fill at completely different rates. The galley tank on a rig where somebody cooks properly will fill in half the time of the bathroom tank, and when it does, your usable grey capacity is 30 gallons, not 76. The other 46 sit there being useless.
Two responses. Fit a crossover with a valve between the tanks if the plumbing geometry allows it, which some owners do and which is a straightforward job on rigs where the tanks sit at similar heights. Or accept the split and manage the tanks separately: wash up in a basin and carry the water to the shower drain, which sounds absurd for about a day and then becomes routine. Either way, check the floor plan before you buy rather than discovering the split in the field.
Sizing for a target stay length
Work backwards from the stay you actually want, not the stay the brochure implies.
- Set the target. Nights off-grid before you are willing to move the rig. Be honest — if you resupply every five days anyway, sizing for fourteen is dead weight you tow all year.
- Set the daily draw. Headcount × usage tier. Add a gallon a day for a dog, more in heat.
- Fresh needed = nights × daily draw × 1.1. The 10% is reserve, not optimism.
- Grey needed = nights × daily draw × 0.8.
- Black needed = headcount × nights × 1.75 gallons, assuming five flushes a day at around a third of a gallon each.
- Find the shortfall. Compare each against what you have. Whichever is short by the largest margin is your real problem, and it is the only one worth spending money on.
For two people at 4 gallons each, that produces this:

Compare that grey column against the grey capacity of anything on a dealer lot advertised as a boondocking-capable trailer. The gap is the point.
The design rule that falls out of it: grey capacity should be at least 80% of fresh capacity. Most rigs ship at 50–65%. If you are shopping rather than retrofitting, this single ratio is a better predictor of real off-grid endurance than any marketing badge on the side of the vehicle, and it is available to you on any spec sheet for free.
Weight, which nobody budgets for either
Fresh water weighs 8.34 lb per gallon. A full 60-gallon tank is 500 lb, and a 100-gallon tank is 834 lb — a substantial fraction of the payload on most half-ton tow vehicles and most Class B vans.
Two practical consequences. First, travel with the fresh tank partly filled and top up near your destination when the water source is known good. Second, adding fresh capacity to a rig that is already close to its payload ceiling is not the free upgrade it appears to be. Extra grey capacity carried as an empty portable tote costs you nothing until it is full, which is usually at the point where you are about to drive it to a dump station anyway.
When grey is the constraint, here is what actually works
In rough order of return on effort and money:
- Cut the inflow first. Low-flow showerhead with a shut-off button, 0.5 GPM aerators, wash dishes in a basin rather than under a running tap. This is a twenty-dollar intervention that typically buys 30–40% more days. Nothing else on this list comes close.
- Move the galley grey out of the tank. Wash-up water into a basin, basin into a portable tote. In many locations dispersed greywater disposal is restricted or prohibited outright, and the rules vary sharply between states and between land management agencies — check the state-by-state position on greywater and septic rules before you assume a bucket of dishwater can go on the ground.
- Carry a portable grey tote. A 20–35 gallon wheeled tote effectively doubles small-rig grey capacity and can be towed to a dump station without breaking camp. This is the highest-value single purchase for anyone whose grey tank is the binding number.
- Reallocate capacity by changing the toilet. Removing the black tank from the equation with a urine-diverting dry toilet frees the whole black volume, and on some rigs the black tank can be repurposed as additional grey. - Add a bladder for fresh, not for grey. Collapsible fresh bladders are cheap and easy. Grey bladders are neither, because grey is heavier by the time you need to move it and because you cannot leave it anywhere.
Your tank monitor is lying to you
Three-probe resistive sensors read the fouling on the tank wall rather than the water level. Black tanks are worst — toilet paper and residue bridge the probes and hold the reading at two-thirds full indefinitely — but grey tanks fool their sensors too, with grease and soap scum.
The practical answer is not to buy better sensors. It is to stop needing them. Count inflow instead: mark the fresh tank fill each morning, or fit a simple inline flow meter on the pump outlet, and track gallons used. Your grey level is a known fraction of that number, and it is more accurate than any panel reading you will get from a factory sensor after its first season.
If you want a genuinely reliable level reading, external ultrasonic or capacitive strip sensors mounted on the outside of the tank wall avoid the fouling problem entirely. They are worth fitting to grey — the tank that decides when you leave — and rarely worth fitting to the others.
What this costs you over time
Water is only free if you ignore what it takes to move it. Potable fills run from free at municipal sources to $5–15 at commercial ones. Dump fees run $10–25 per visit where they are charged at all, and a shorter tank runtime means more of them. Fuel to break camp and drive to a dump station is the largest line item and the one nobody counts, because it does not arrive as a bill.

Two other things worth reading before you finalise a plan. If you are drawing from wells, springs or untreated sources rather than potable fills, what treatment you actually need depends on the source, not the number of filter stages.
