About Wacky Wolf Explorer

A neutral technical reference for people running power, water, climate and connectivity systems away from mains infrastructure.

What this site is

Wacky Wolf Explorer is a technical reference publication covering off-grid power, RV and overland energy systems, and rural self-sufficiency infrastructure in the United States. It exists because almost everything written in this category is written to sell hardware, and the arithmetic that would show whether the hardware is the right size is left out.

We publish the arithmetic. Sizing figures are shown as calculations that can be checked line by line. Cost comparisons are itemised rather than summarised. Where a product is not worth the money or a build is not worth doing, that is what the page says.

What it covers

Seven sections: power, connectivity, climate, water, rigs, rules and tools. Fifty reference articles and five calculators. The library is deliberately deep rather than wide — there is no attempt to cover every query in the category, and several profitable content types are excluded on purpose. Those exclusions are set out in the editorial standards.

How it is funded

Advertising, through Google AdSense. That is the whole of it. There are no affiliate links anywhere on this site, no sponsored posts, no paid placements, and no commercial relationship with any manufacturer, retailer, insurer, lender or dealer mentioned in the text. No vendor sees a page before it is published.

Advertising is placed automatically by Google and is not selected, reviewed or endorsed by us. An advertisement appearing next to an article is not a recommendation. See the privacy policy and cookie policy for what that advertising collects, and how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

What it will not do

  • Carry affiliate links, or rank products for commission.
  • Gate a calculator result behind an email address.
  • Soften a calculator output because the honest number looks discouraging.
  • Present a state-level table where the rule is actually set by a county, a municipality or an individual land manager.
  • Offer legal, financial, insurance or engineering advice. It is a reference, and it says so where it matters.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, we want to know, and we would rather hear it from a reader than find it in a search console report. Write to editorial@wackywolfexplorer.com with the page and the correction. Substantive corrections are made to the page itself, not appended as a note at the bottom.
