This policy explains what information Wacky Wolf Explorer (wackywolfexplorer.com) collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read rather than skimmed past, because the site takes the position that a policy nobody can understand is not really a disclosure.

The short version

We do not ask you to create an account. We do not run a mailing list. Our interactive calculators do not send your inputs anywhere — they run in your browser, and we never see or store the appliance lists, costs or system details you enter.

What we do collect is standard web analytics, and our advertising partner Google collects data to serve and measure advertising. Those two things are the substance of this policy.

Information we collect directly

Server logs. Our hosting provider records standard technical information when you request a page: IP address, browser type and version, operating system, referring page, and the date and time of the request. This is generated automatically by the web server and is used for security, diagnostics and abuse prevention. Logs are retained for a limited period and are not combined with any other data to identify you.

Information you send us. If you email us, we receive whatever you choose to include in that message. We use it to reply and to keep a record of the correspondence.

Calculator inputs — a specific note. The five tools on this site (the off-grid load calculator, solar and battery sizer, inverter surge calculator, wire gauge calculator and cost-of-ownership calculator) perform their calculations in your browser. Your inputs are not transmitted to our servers, not stored, and not used for any purpose. There is no email gate on any result. This is a deliberate design decision, not an oversight.

Information collected by third parties

This site displays advertising through Google AdSense, using Auto Ads. Google and its advertising partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads and measure their performance.

Google uses cookies to serve advertising based on your prior visits to this site and other sites.
Third-party vendors and ad networks may also serve ads on this site and may use their own cookies.
Ad personalisation may involve inferring interests from browsing behaviour across many websites.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand which articles people read, how they arrive, and where they go next. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects information including pages viewed, session duration, approximate geographic location derived from IP address, device type, and referral source.

We use this to decide what to write and what to correct. We do not use it to identify individual visitors, and we have IP anonymisation in effect.

You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting data using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

To understand which content is useful, which is out of date, and what to write next.
To display advertising, which is how the site is funded.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it with third parties except as described in this policy, and except where required by law.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal information, including the right to request access to it, request correction or deletion, object to certain processing, or withdraw consent.

Our lawful bases for processing are legitimate interest (site security, analytics, and understanding what content to produce) and consent (advertising and analytics cookies, where required).

We do not sell personal information as that term is defined under California law. Children

This site is written for adults making decisions about vehicles, property and electrical systems. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Data retention and security

Server logs are retained for a limited period for security and diagnostic purposes. Analytics data is retained according to the retention period configured in Google Analytics. Email correspondence is retained for as long as needed to handle the matter it concerns.

We take reasonable technical measures to protect the site, including HTTPS across all pages. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

We link to primary sources deliberately, because our content depends on them being checkable. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites, and this policy does not apply once you leave ours.
