Connectivity is sold on download speed and bought on reliability, but off-grid it is neither of those things first. It is a power decision. A dish that draws a continuous load twenty-four hours a day is frequently the largest single item on a build’s energy budget — larger than the fridge, larger than the lighting and the fans combined. Choose the hardware without costing that, and the battery bank you sized last spring is now undersized.
The second thing this category gets wrong is comparing monthly prices. Hardware, installation, plan changes, the mount, the cable run and the inevitable second device all land inside five years. Monthly price is the least useful number available.

Answer two questions before you shop
Is this a fixed address or a moving one? Almost every recommendation in this category flips on that answer. A fixed rural property can mount an antenna high, run a proper cable, take a wired backhaul if one exists and treat power as a solved problem. A vehicle can do none of those things and has to carry the load in its battery bank. Guidance written for one and applied to the other is where most of the disappointment in this category originates.
What is your actual bandwidth requirement, as opposed to your assumed one? Video calls, remote desktop and cloud file sync are latency-sensitive and comparatively light on volume. Streaming is the reverse. A connection that handles a working day comfortably may still be the wrong one for a household that watches television in the evening, and the reverse is more common still. Specify against the demanding use, not the frequent one.
