The number on the advertisement is not the number that stops you. In the overwhelming majority of real towing setups, the truck runs out of payload long before it runs out of tow rating — and payload is the number nobody quotes at the dealership.
This is not a marginal effect. A half-ton pickup advertised at 11,000 pounds of towing capacity will frequently be over its legal limits behind a 7,000-pound travel trailer, with a family in the cab and a hitch in the receiver. The tow rating was never wrong. It was just answering a different question than the one the buyer was asking.
Here is the arithmetic that actually governs, where the published numbers come from, and how to check your own truck in about ten minutes.
The four ratings, and which one binds
Every vehicle carries four weight ratings, and every one of them is a separate limit. Exceeding any single one puts you outside the vehicle’s design envelope regardless of how much headroom the other three have.

Payload is not a fifth rating. It is a derived number: GVWR minus what the truck actually weighed when it left the factory. It appears on a separate yellow sticker in the door jamb, phrased as the combined weight of occupants and cargo never exceeding some figure.
That yellow sticker is the single most important number on the vehicle for anyone towing an RV, and it is specific to your individual truck — cab configuration, bed length, engine, drivetrain, trim and factory options all move it, often by several hundred pounds within the same model line.
Why payload binds first
Tongue weight counts against payload.
That one sentence explains most overloaded rigs on the road. The downward force the trailer exerts on the hitch does not travel down some separate path to the axles; it lands on the truck, in the bed or behind it, and it consumes payload exactly the way a passenger does.
The industry planning figures are well established. Conventional bumper-pull trailers should run tongue weight between 10 and 15 percent of loaded trailer weight — below 10 percent and the trailer becomes prone to sway at highway speed; above 15 percent and the rear suspension squats hard enough to unload the front axle and degrade steering. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck pin weight runs higher, commonly quoted as 15 to 25 percent, because the pin sits over the rear axle rather than behind it. Experienced fifth-wheel owners and several manufacturer guides recommend planning at 20 to 23 percent rather than at the bottom of the range.
Plan conservatively. Use 13 percent for a conventional trailer and 20 to 23 percent for a fifth wheel when you are estimating before purchase, and use the trailer’s GVWR rather than its dry weight. You will load it up eventually. Everybody does.
The worked example
A typical half-ton crew cab with a 1,650-pound payload rating, towing a travel trailer with a 7,000-pound GVWR:

That truck is 170 pounds over its GVWR before anyone has packed a cooler, and its advertised tow rating was never remotely the issue. The trailer weighs 7,000 pounds against a tow rating that might be 9,000 or 11,000. On the number the buyer was shown, there is enormous headroom. On the number that governs, there is none.
This is the standard failure mode, and it is why the half-ton-towable marketing category deserves the scepticism it gets. A great many trailers marketed as half-ton towable are within a half-ton’s tow rating and outside its payload once a family is in the truck.
Where the published numbers come from
Since roughly the 2013 model year, most manufacturers have rated tow capacity against SAE J2807, a standard that specifies how GCWR is tested and how trailer weight rating is calculated from it. It exists so that ratings from different manufacturers can be compared on a common basis, and the tests cover acceleration, hill climb, handling, braking and structural requirements up to 14,000 pounds GVWR.
The standard’s calculation assumptions are where the disconnect with real life originates:
- Tow ratings assume a driver and one passenger at 150 pounds each — 300 pounds total.
- For light-duty pickups under 8,500 pounds GVWR, the tested vehicle is assumed to carry up to 70 pounds of aftermarket hitch equipment.
- Trailer weight rating is derived by subtracting the tow vehicle’s tested weight, including those occupant and hitch allowances, from the tested GCWR.
So a published tow rating already accounts for two average adults and a hitch. It does not account for your third passenger, your gear, your bed cargo, or your actual tongue weight beyond the tested assumption.
Payload works differently, and this trips people up constantly. The yellow payload sticker is for the truck with a full tank of fuel and nothing else in it. No occupants. No hitch. No cargo. Every pound of all three comes out of the sticker figure.
Two useful consequences follow. First, tow ratings and payload ratings are calculated independently and, as several manufacturers state in their own tow-guide footnotes, they are mutually exclusive — using all of one does not leave you all of the other. Second, manufacturer tow charts are usually estimated values rounded to the nearest ten pounds, published for a configuration that may not exactly match the truck you bought.
The payload budget
Work this before you shop, not after you have signed. Everything in the left column comes out of the yellow sticker number.

If the total exceeds available payload, the options are a lighter trailer, fewer passengers, less gear, or a heavier truck. There is no fifth option.
Dry weight is a fiction, and the industry knows it
The weight on the trailer’s brochure — variously called dry weight, UVW or shipping weight — is the trailer with standard equipment and nothing else. No batteries. No propane. No dealer-installed options. No water. No food, clothing, tools, bikes or firewood.
A widely used planning rule adds 800 to 1,500 pounds to UVW for typical loading. Water alone accounts for a large share of it at 8.34 pounds per gallon: a 40-gallon fresh tank is 334 pounds and a 100-gallon tank is 834.
Use the trailer’s GVWR for all planning. It is the number the manufacturer says the trailer may weigh when loaded, and it is the only figure that survives contact with a real camping trip.
What a weight-distributing hitch does and does not do
A weight-distributing hitch redistributes some of the tongue load across the tow vehicle’s front axle and the trailer’s axles, using spring bars to apply leverage. It restores front-axle load, improves steering feel and headlight aim, and materially improves stability. On most conventional trailers over about 5,000 pounds it is either required by the manufacturer or a very good idea.
What it does not do:
- It does not reduce the total tongue weight the truck is carrying.
- It does not increase payload, GVWR, GAWR or GCWR.
- Its own hardware weight — commonly 80 to 120 pounds — counts against your payload.
The same applies to airbags, helper springs and upgraded shocks. They reduce squat, improve ride quality and help the truck carry a rated load more comfortably. They do not change any rating. The frame, axles, brakes and tires remain rated for the original numbers, and so does the vehicle’s legal weight limit.
Anyone who tells you an airbag kit “adds 1,000 pounds of payload” is describing a comfort improvement in the language of a capacity increase. Those are not the same thing, and the distinction matters if you are ever weighed, stopped, or involved in a collision.
Two limits people forget
Rear axle GAWR. It is entirely possible to sit under GVWR and over rear GAWR, particularly with a fifth wheel or a truck camper, because the load is concentrated behind the cab. Weigh the axles separately, not just the total.
Frontal area and grade. Tow ratings are established under test conditions. A tall, flat-fronted travel trailer at 65 mph into a headwind, on a long grade, at altitude, is a different problem from the same weight in a low, aerodynamic trailer. Several manufacturers publish frontal-area limits alongside weight limits; they are worth reading. The weight arithmetic can be perfect and the combination can still be unpleasant and slow.
Go and weigh it
Everything above is estimation. The only way to know is a scale.
Public CAT scales at truck stops typically cost around $12 to $15 and give axle-by-axle readings accurate to within about 20 pounds. Load the rig exactly as you would for a trip — full water, full propane, all passengers, all gear — and take three measurements:
- Truck alone, loaded, unhitched. Front axle, rear axle, total. Compare against GVWR and both GAWRs.
- Truck and trailer, hitched, loaded. Steer axle, drive axle, trailer axles. Compare the total against GCWR.
- Subtract. Truck-alone rear axle weight subtracted from hitched rear axle weight gives your real tongue or pin weight. This is almost always higher than the brochure figure.
That third number is the one that surprises people. It is also the one worth knowing before you find out about it on a mountain descent.
If the numbers do not work
Three honest routes forward, in order of how often they are the right answer.
Buy a lighter trailer. The most common correct answer and the one buyers resist hardest. Trailers under about 3,500 pounds GVWR open up to a far wider range of tow vehicles, and the off-road teardrops and compact trailers under 2,500 lbs go places that a heavier rig cannot follow anyway.
Change platform entirely. If the tow vehicle is the constraint, it may not be a trailer you want at all. The comparison between travel trailers, Class B vans and truck campers works through what each platform actually costs you in capability and in cash.
Buy a heavier truck. Legitimate, expensive, and worth modelling properly rather than assuming. A three-quarter-ton diesel is not a marginal upgrade over a half-ton petrol truck in running costs, insurance or purchase price. Run it through the five-year cost of ownership model before you commit, because the tow vehicle is frequently the largest line item in the whole exercise.
One further consideration if you are moving up in weight: crossing certain combined weight thresholds can change your registration category and, in some states, your licence requirements. Those thresholds are set at state level and are not uniform — weight classes, licences and registration fees are covered separately, and you should verify against your own state’s requirements before assuming a heavier combination is simply a matter of buying the truck.

How much can my truck actually tow? In practice, the largest trailer whose loaded tongue weight still fits inside your remaining payload after passengers, cargo and hitch hardware. For most half-ton crew cabs carrying a family, that lands somewhere between 5,000 and 7,000 pounds of trailer GVWR — well short of the advertised tow rating.
